New requirements of
EN 81-76:2026-01
In buildings where evacuation via staircases is not fast or feasible due to immobile persons, specially designed evacuation elevators are used in emergency situations. The updated EN 81-76:2026-01 defines new requirements for these evacuation elevators.
This is particularly relevant for
- hospitals,
- care facilities,
- airports,
- high-rise buildings or
- public infrastructure,
where stair evacuation is not a safe option in an emergency.
For remotely assisted evacuation, the standard now requires that, in addition to existing audio communication systems, video feeds from the floors must also be available to allow for a more accurate assessment of the situation.
